Random Thoughts (#12). ATTRITION

ATTRITION cannot be completely avoided.  Still, all companies must try to contain it.  Because attrition costs.

Recruitment of experienced resources is necessary as companies grow.   Infosys brought in Vishal Sikka.   RBI brought in Rajan.   When experienced resources accept a new job, they obviously would leave their current employer.    Since recruitment of experienced resources cannot be avoided,  ATTRITION also cannot be avoided.

Resources plan to quit a job for myriad reasons.  An informal EXIT interview/conversation with the leaving employees will provide invaluable information to understand the reasons.  Steps must be taken to mitigate avoidable attrition.  This is easily said than done.

Whatever be the reason, when an employee eventually decides to quit, make his exit as smooth as he was welcomed when he joined.    Such employees will always speak good about the company; an unknown evangelist for life.

If possible, have a system to selectively keep in touch with some ex-employees in whichever manner that is practical for a company.

By the way, never frustrate an employee who wants to quit.  Such employees will vent out their frustration among the other colleagues and friends while in office. He will speak ill even after leaving the company.  That will result in avoidable rumours and unhealthy conversation among other employees.    Management must consciously pre-empt such situations.  Because, attrition cannot be completely avoided.

Random Thoughts #11 SELFISH. UPGRADE. CELEBRATE LIFE.

It’s okay to be SELFISH.  Being selfish is natural.

But, never take advantage of others who trust us.  Never deceive anyone who believes in us.  Never take credit for others efforts.

We must perform our duty as best as we can.  And, explore options for continual improvement.

Like we expect our Direct Reports to perform well, we must also ensure that our Boss does not fail in front of his Boss.

Always develop our Direct Reports.  Our growth depends upon their growth.  We also learn when we develop others.

We may make some mistakes in the course of our life; it’s okay.  Don’t regret, for we will pay its price.  To err is human.   But, we must learn from our mistakes; should not repeat them.

Keep upgrading.  Live and enjoy every day responsibly.   Do not have to wait for a New Year or a Diwali …

Thank God for his blessings.  And, celebrate life.   Good day.
